Please use this page to submit completed Part 1: Diet Photo Journal (30 points).
Submission Schedule for Parts 1 and 2 of the Diet Analysis Project.
Unlike most other assignments in this course, the deadline for submission on the Project is NOT 11:59 pm. For Parts 1 and 2 of this Project, there are rolling deadlines for submission (in accordance with the request by Carmen IT). That means that your submission deadline is designated according to the linked spreadsheet below.
Click on this link, and you will see a spreadsheet listing the first (given) names of the students in this class. Find your first (given) name on the worksheet. Your name is either on the PINK list, the BLUE list, the YELLOW list, or the GREEN list.
If your name is on the PINK list, your Part 1, Photo Journal and Part 2, Consumption Log, must be submitted by 9:00 am, Friday, Sept 27.
If your name is on the BLUE list, your Part 1, Photo Journal and Part 2, Consumption Log must be submitted by 11:00 am, Friday, Sept 27.
If your name is on the YELLOW list, your Part 1, Photo Journal and Part 2, Consumption Log must be submitted by 1:00 pm, Friday, Sept 27.
If your name is on the GREEN list, your Part 1, Photo Journal and Part 2, Consumption Log must be submitted by 3:00 pm, Friday, Sept 27.
Part 1 – Photo Journal
Your Photo Journal should be a Word document (doc or docx). Each meal or food item that is photographed should be accompanied by a validation as described in the Diet Analysis Project Instructions located in the Project module and copied below for your convenience.
Your Photo Journal should be compiled in chronological order, with your notes and comments as shown in the example Photo Journal.
Please be sure that your Photo Journal includes a header1 with YourName.# and page numbers, examples below.

The saved Photo Journal should be titled PJ YourFirstName LastName (e.g., PJ Louise Campbell).
After you have submitted, you are strongly encouraged to save a screen shot to document that it was successfully submitted, AND double-check that the submitted document is what you intended. If you look at it in Carmen, and the pictures look like they are running together, download it and take another look.
Please be aware that your PJ is a rather large document (e-speaking), and it may take a few minutes (rather than seconds) to load. Also, realize that there are likely about a hundred other students doing the same thing, which means the submission ‘traffic’ level is very high, and that slows things down even more. Even more, you are submitting both your PJ and your CL at roughly the same time, which doubles the number of submissions that Carmen is handling.
My recommendation is that you be patient. Submit the PJ and the CL. Take screen shots that show (at least) that you started the submissions AND SAVE THOSE. That could be the difference in your receiving points (or not) for this assignment.
Now, walk away from your computer. Make a phone call. Have a snack (or a beer, glass of wine, latte, candy bar, yoga session, hot shower) – whatever you do to reward yourself – you’ve just done most of a huge project, and you deserve it! Wait at least 30 minutes before attempting a second submission. (I have had students submit multiple times within as little as 5 minutes. Each additional submission slowed down the entire system, and everything eventually came through.)
If you run into a problem on Sept 27, contact the Help Desk. We are submitting during the day at the request of Carmen IT, so that they are available to help if needed. I will be out of pocket (unavailable) that entire day, and I will not be able to respond to emails.

For your convenience, these are the instructions copied from the Project module:
Part 1. Data Collection and Food Photo Journal (PJ)
For this part of the project, you will record everything you consume for three (3) consecutive days. That includes all foods, beverages, and dietary supplements (including water, vitamins, energy drinks, energy bars, protein powder).
At least one of the days for which you record your food intake must be a weekday (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday) and at least one of the days must be a weekend day (Saturday or Sunday). You may count Friday as either a weekday or as a weekend day.
You will record this information in two (2) documents. The first document is a Food Photo Journal (Part 1). You will take a picture of each item you consume for each of the three days. (Multiple meal components, e.g., sandwich, fruit, beverage can all be in one photo.) Many students carry a water bottle which they refill and drink from during the day. If this is the case for you, then you may photograph the bottle only once per day, and be sure to enter the total amount of water that you drink each day in the spreadsheet. You may not use any photograph more than once in the PJ.
You must include a validation with each photo. The validation is a notecard with YourName.#, the date, and a brief description of the food. (If you are able to date-stamp your photos, it is not necessary to put the date on the validation card.) When compiling the photo journal, you will enter the date, and again identify the food and amount (the picture resolution sometimes affects our ability to read the details). Please add a header (as shown in the example) with YourName.# and page numbers. The validation card does not have to be fancy – use a pen and napkin if that is all that is handy! Just be sure that it is legible.
For food which is prepared/ consumed at home (as opposed to the campus eateries), you may wish to include photos of package labels. Include both the front (food product or component identifier) label and the nutrition panel from the label. You may need to use the nutrition panel for your analysis.
Insert these photos into a Word (not pdf) document in chronological order. The saved photo journal should be titled PJYourFirstNameLastName. Submit it, and double check that what got submitted is what you intended.
If you open your PJ directly on the submission page, and it somehow does not look ‘right’ after you submit it, download it and look at it again. Sometimes the photos run into each other on the submission page in Carmen, but they look fine if you download.
