Midterm Essay
This is the only essay you will submit in this course, and I urge you to choose wisely! Put your best work forward in this essay. Your citation style and grammar need to be correct. I urge you to take time in this essay’s construction as it is imperative for your overall success in the course. I will be grading you on a formal rubric and essays that do not conform to the minimum guidelines for this assignment will not be graded. You may find the grading rubric in the Course Documents / Getting Started module. There are no resubmissions, and no late work accepted in this course without a documented medical emergency. You should receive a receipt from TurnItIn upon successful submission. It is your responsibility to verify that your essay was submitted properly and on time. Again, NO late work is accepted in this course for ANY reason other than a documented medical emergency. Please do not wait until the last minute to submit this, or any assignment.
The midterm essay is the primary assessment of your learning in this course. Reading the material and taking open book tests does not fully demonstrate your command of the information. For this reason, the majority of your grade will be based on your written work. The deadline for the essay falls at the midpoint in the semester so you have ample time to plan and construct your essay (see calendar for details). Late work is not accepted in this course. It is wise to consult with The WriteCite on campus for writing help, grammar, and mechanics. Please take the time to edit your work. Proper MLA citation is a must. Visit The Owl at Purdue cite online for guidance in using the MLA handbook and do not rely on automated citation generators…you will lose points this way. Please see the resource created for you in the Course Documents / Getting Started module titled: How to Cite Correctly in this Course for all the details you need.
Citations Guide Resource:
All course readings are expected to have been examined prior to submitting the midterm essay.
As a standing requirement for all coursework, your assignment must utilize 3 scholarly sources (peer-reviewed articles from an academic journal). Each source is to be properly cited in the body of your text and on a Works Cited page using formal MLA citation format.
There is a list of essay topics within each unit, please pick one from the list provided. Each prompt can be download (in MS Word format) at any time, so feel free to plan ahead to determine which essay you wish to complete during the semester. All assignments must be submitted to the Turn It In dropbox when completed. Completing more essays than required will not earn you extra credit. There is, however, one extra credit essay for the course which carries the same guidelines as the midterm essay.
Essay Formatting:
-Your essay must be 1000 words in length. It is okay to do a bit less (950) or a bit more (1200), but much less or much more will result in loss of points.
-Your essay is to have a cover page with the following information: Your name, course and section number, the semester of enrollment, a word count, and a title indicating the topic of your essay. The word count should reflect your own work (do not include citations, quotes, cover pages, or a bibliography).
-Each student is expected to utilize 3 scholarly sources (peer-reviewed articles from academic journals) per writing assignment. Please visit the Library page from the TWU website and locate the databases for scholarly journals. Academic Search Complete and Jstor are good examples of which to use. If you need assistance locating this feature or anything else pertaining to library aid, please contact the research librarian. It is imperative that you consult the document: How to Cite Correctly in this Course. Also–I am here and happy to help guide you. Please ask any and all questions you have PRIOR to submit an assignment. Give 48 hours as a turn around time and let’s work together to create essays you are proud of and that will advance your scholarship for future courses. Learn citation WITH ME, and you will move on as a stronger student after this course. My aim is to send you off to your higher-level courses fully capable of being professional in your conduct, citing properly, and tackling self-paced assignments confidently. I am here for you, but I also expect you to put in the work necessary for academic growth. I firmly believe we are better together.
-For current events related information, use a newspaper, news magazine, news website, a court case, or an actual law. The course textbook, Wikipedia, internet search engines, blogs, and similar items are examples of unacceptable research sources on the collegiate level.
-Failure to identify sources is plagiarism. Provide the full MLA citation for all outside sources. All references are to be documented within the body of the assignment and on a Works Cited page. The Owl at Purdue is recommended in creating your citations in place of any automated citation generator.
-Only your own words will count toward the writing requirements. The writing assignments are intended to assess your comprehension of the material.
-Assignments will be run through a plagiarism checking tool called Turn It In. You should turn your assignment in through the designated drop box.
-All assignments are expected to meet college-level writing requirements; all answers are to be in essay format and the expectation is for each student to engage the topics using critical analysis. Please do not attempt to provide simplified or elementary answers if you wish to earn credit for your work. Take the time to fully explain your ideas and demonstrate the depth of your understanding to earn the grade you want.
-Do not use first-person tones in the essay assignments. The prompts are designed to help you think about the topic, not to generate a direct response. First-person tone is inappropriate in a college essay but may be used in discussion forum activities.
-Do not recycle previously written and submitted work in this course. Only original work written by you for this particular class is accepted.
–There is no credit for partial work. The minimum writing expectation for each assignment or activity must be satisfied to earn a grade. Incomplete assignments will receive a zero. Essays are graded on a standard rubric.
