Behavioral and Cognitive Behavioral Models
It is critical to understand that there are key differences between traditional Behavioral interventions and Cognitive Behavioral interventions. Compare and contrast an aspect of family therapy (e.g. working with a child diagnosed with ADHD or a neurodevelopmental disorder) typically treated by behavioral methods, with an aspect (e.g. a mother experiencing chronic depression or alcohol abuse) that might benefit from a more cognitive behavioral perspective. Please be sure that at least three aspects are compared and contrasted in your response.
Solution-Focused and Collaborative Models
Solution-Focused and Collaborative therapists embrace the themes of collaboration, conversational questions, and non-pathologizing. Given this outlook, what two specific strategies and applied interventions can a counselor use while honoring the principles of these theories? From the perspectives of assessment and treatment planning, would it be a challenge for you to honor the collaborative role while remaining proactive? Why or why not? Please be sure to support your response with scholarly backing.
Intake and Treatment Planning
You are a family therapist that has just completed a comprehensive initial assessment of a family that includes Susan, the biological mother of two female adolescent children (Beth age 15 and Lucy age 13) and Susan’s wife Katie. During the comprehensive assessment the following information was provided. Katie and Susan have been married for two years, and have lived together for four years. Beth recently began arguing with Katie and when Katie tries to discipline Beth, Susan steps in. Katie is upset because Susan allows Beth to do as she pleases and Susan does not follow through with any discipline measures. Lucy sat quietly in the corner during the assessment and only shrugged her shoulders when asked a question.
You will now collaborate with the family to develop a treatment plan. What kinds of information gathered during the assessment will play an important role in the development of the treatment plan? Identify two additional questions that you would want to ask the family to aid in the development of the treatment plan?
