Discussion Social Location
Purpose: The purpose of this discussion is to get you to understand social location. Your social location is crucial to sociological analysis. We very much look to social location to explore whether you end up in a prison cell or college classroom for example. People from different social locations (lower class, female, Hispanic, etc.) have different life chances as you will see this term. In fact, when you interact with your classmates, you’ll see first hand how people have different social locations and that may act as a predictor of your employment, views on society, education, or even health status.
What is social location? Social location does NOT mean where you live geographically necessarily. Social location is really talking about the many social demographics a given person is comprised of. What does this mean? Social demographics consist of your race, ethnicity, age, gender, education, social class, sexual orientation, religion and so on. It is also imperative to understand that we are NOT just one of these. For example, I am a white male in my thirties with a certain education for example. Therefore your social location is comprised of several social demographics.
Sounds great right? Well, we can think about how our social location can help us and how it can possibly hurt us or prevent us from obtaining something. What is meant by obtain something? Our social location may act as a predictor to what type of job we get, the quality of education we attain, or simply how the social world treats and views us!
Instructions: Using social location, discuss how you “made it” as a college student at Macomb Community College. You need to have a minimum of 3 full sentences for each response. If you write less than that you are NOT discussing enough. You must answer all the questions. You also must reply to your classmates posts/comments. 10 points.
It is important that we learn from each other during these group discussions. It is okay if you don’t always agree with someone else’s point of view. In fact, hearing those points can actually be very educational. But be respectful!
