The similarity between Rip Van Winkle and Young Goodman Brown is they both went on a life-changing journey. Both men left their homes. Both men left their wives and families. These men needed to experience and test substance outside their villages, which dealt with sin, gossip, theft, and encounter people with ill intentions out their town. Both also returned to their villages as a changed man due to their experiences on their journey.

The contrast between the two stories is both men return to their villages as a changed man. After Rip Van Winkle’s journey, being gone for 20 years, the neighbors said, ” Welcome home again, old neighbor (Levine, 2017). His neighbors embraced him and so did Rip Van Winkle. Goodman’s journey changed his values and morals to where he questioned everyone around him. Goodman did not socialize with the community when he returned, unlike Rip Van Winkle. Goodman lost his faith in his wife, family, and community. He feels that everyone sins. When he returned, he arrived back with a permanent emotional distance between him and the village people.

Each of Goodman and Rip characters changed through their experiences. Goodman returned to his village as a ” stern, sad, a darkly meditative, distressful, if not desperate man( Levine, 2017). Rip van winkle came out better in the end because he ended up living with his daughter and grandson. Rip returned to a happier place in his life. He did not have his nagging wife in his ear anymore. He ended his life in peace and contentedness, unlike Goodman. Another contrast, Goodman didn’t have any interest in other interests, but Rip Van Winkle did. Rip loved to go hunting for squirrels, and he loved his dog. I think these stories are more different than similar.
