Write a 4 to 5-page (not counting title and reference pages) APA-style reflective essay on Motivational Interviewing. Important Caveat: at least ⅔ of this reflective essay (the equivalent of 3-pages) should be your own reflections and critical thinking. Please limit your use of cited paraphrasing and direct quotes to ⅓ or less of your paper. Your instructor is most interested in your reaction to this therapeutic approach and how you plan or don’t plan to use this in your future clinical practice as well as your evaluation of your current comfort and skill level in using MI with future clients. Use citations judiciously as a springboard for your own deeper thoughts and reflections as you address the following areas:

  • An explanation of MI that presents the underlying beliefs and assumptions of this approach. In your own words discuss what does or does not make this an effective approach.
  • Discussion of how a therapist working within a motivational interviewing perspective would engage a new client and how this is similar to or different from your previous understanding of engagement.
  • Assessment of MI from the following perspectives:
    • Strengths-based: on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being very weak and 10 being extremely strong, how would you rate the strengths-based nature of MI? Please discuss why you chose this rating.
    • Trauma-Informed: on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being very weak and 10 being extremely strong, how would you rate the trauma-informed nature of MI? Please discuss why you chose this rating.
    • Culturally Sensitive: on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being very weak and 10 being extremely strong, how would you rate the cultural sensitivity of MI? Please discuss why you chose this rating.
    • Client-Directed: on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being very weak and 10 being extremely strong, how would you rate the degree to which clients are viewed as the expert in their own healing and change process with MI? Please discuss why you chose this rating.
  • Share your personal and professional reactions to MI overall. Discuss whether or not this approach resonates with you and why or why not. If you were to prioritize counseling approaches, with what you are familiar with at this point, where would MI fall? Would it be on the top of your list, in the middle, or not on your list at all? Please explain your answer.
  • Conclude this reflective essay with an honest appraisal of your current understanding of MI, your comfort level in using this in your present and future practice, and your assessment of your current level of skill. Please comment on self-assessments 14.1 and 14.2 that you completed in Rosengren, Chapter 14, as part of this concluding section. In addition, complete and share two final Likert scale ratings as part of this final section. Your ratings have absolutely no effect on your grade for this paper or this course so please be honest:
    • Confidence Rating: on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being very weak and 10 being extremely strong, how confident are you in your ability to begin using MI? Please discuss your response and share one example of something that would help you move up one number in your rating.
    • Intentionality Rating: on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being very weak and 10 being extremely strong, how likely are you to begin using MI? Please discuss your response and share one example of something that would help you move up one number in your rating.
