Good evening professor and class,

Texas, the current state that I reside in was given a challenge award of $28,810,208 from the Health Information Exchange (HIE). In order to receive this award the state had to implement statewide health information exchange to improve the quality and efficiency of care throughout the state and or between states (HealthIT.gov, 2019). Other ways the state earned this can include:

Achieving health goals through health information exchange

Improving long-term and post-acute care transitions

Consumer-mediated information exchange

Enabling enhanced query for patient care

Fostering distributed population-level analytics

The award was given to Texas Health and Human Services and since the state has developed a strategic and operation plan for HIE (Texas Health and Human Services, n.d.). Texas has since worked to improve the HIE use through programs like Texas Medicaid. There is currently a HIE Connectivity Project that’s goal is to increase HIE using three strategies: Medicaid Provider HIE Connectivity, HIE Infrastructure, and Emergency Department Encounter Notifications.

Greetings classmates,

The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene was awarded $9,313,924 for the cooperative award, and an additional $1,683,171 for the Health Information Exchange Challenge. This additional funding was awarded to 10 States for their innovations and solutions on Health Information Exchange based on 5 criteria. The State of Maryland satisfied all 5 criteria which were:

  1. Achieving health goals through health information exchange
  2. Improving long-term and post-acute care transitions
  3. Consumer-mediated information exchange
  4. Enabling enhanced query for patient care
  5. Fostering distributed population-level analytics.

This award essentially is for good governance and promotion of best practices in regards to the exchange of information that provides better outcomes for patients and healthcare in general. The Health Information Exchange aims to increase the connectivity of patients and their health needs. This can facilitate patients obtaining medical care across any facility without the loss of their records. I would improve self-care for patients who can access their medical portals and see their summaries. States with this award will ultimately improve their data-sharing capabilities during public health emergencies and other health crises.
