After reading the short story “Just walk on by, A Black Man Ponders” by Brent Staples. Why  do you think he feels the need to whistle classical music when he is walking, and why? Please use one quote from the story to support your well thought out answer.

 here is two of the discussion from classmates need to be respond. thank youAfter reading “Just Walk on by, A Black Man Ponders” by Brent Staples I believe he feels the need to whistle classical music when he is walking so that people of other races can somehow perceive him as a an actual human being. Within the article he states “I began to take precautions to make myself less threatening” and then proceeds to list the everyday things he had to change around in order to make people within his vicinity feel comfortable. He recalls black men experiences from his friends, news and his daily life where situations that happened made him feel uncomfortable. However, instead of talking from a place of anger he instead showed an understanding which made him change for society. He emphasized in that quote that being a Black man in America comes with nothing but constant fear and adverse feelings from individuals who do not understand what it means to be Black in America.After reading the short story “Just walk on by, A Black Ponders” by Brent Staples, I think he feels the need to whistle classical music while walking because it allows him to seem less threatening. Through his life as a Black man he has been profiled because of his skin color. He feels that whistling allows people to see that there is nothing to fear. Being that he chose the tune of classic al music to whistle that may change the way people may view him, the sophistication in knowing music as such as classical. Brent stated, “Over the years, I learned to smother the rage I felt at so often being taken for a criminal..I now take precautions to make myself less threatening”, Therefore, this can tell you that whistling was one of the things he felt would make him seem less dangerous and less threatening, being that he has experienced being taken for a criminal all from the color of his skin.
