CLASSMATE DISCUSSION: (DL) ( W2 DQ2 PUB620)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Million Hearts 2022 is a national initiative that aims to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes over a five-year period; the end goal being by 2022 (CDC, 2020a). The objectives for this public health program include the following: keeping people healthy, optimizing care, and focus on priority populations (CDC, 2020a). An update towards this initiative was released in September 2020 and there has been mentionable progress towards the optimizing care objective. There is major work and research on self-measured blood pressure monitoring with clinical support and home-based cardiac rehabilitation programs (CDC, 2020b). These are still in the development phases, but the hope is that they will be successful soon. As for the other objectives, they are ideal for this public health program to vulnerable populations and prioritizing healthy lifestyle habits. The objectives for Million Hearts 2022 are similar to my obesity prevention program among adults in Weld County, Colorado. The only Million Hearts 2022 objective that is drastically different from mine is optimizing care. However, the keeping people healthy and focus on priority populations objectives are almost directly in line with mine. I hope to emphasize regular physical activity and a nutritious diet for preventing obesity. Additionally, I will focus on at-risk adults like those of racial and ethnic minorities, low-income, and poor living conditions.
