Two different assignments:
Part 1 Review questions for Annotated Bibliography
Please answer the following questions:
What is your current major?
Which research question will you choose to answer for our final Annotated Bibliography project?
Why did you choose that research question?
What difficulties do you think you might encounter?
Will you use APA or MLA citation for your Annotated Bibliography Project?
Part 2 Annotated Bibliography
Annotated Bibliography Exercise
Your final project requires that you locate and evaluate sources on your own. An annotated bibliography is one tool
which helps you to think critically about the sources you’ll encounter in your research. You should certainly have
completed the ResearchPath Tutorial on Moodle before you jump in to this assignment.
An annotated bibliography is a standard References or Works Cited bibliography, combined with annotations about
each of the sources. For this assignment, you will compose an annotated bibliography based on a specific Research
Question.
Choose ONE of the following research prompts and build your annotated bibliography that will answer it.
A. How does your major or discipline affect local or regional issues in the area where you live (this can mean
Pocatello/Idaho/the Intermountain West, but can also mean your hometown/region—if your hometown or
home region is in a non-English speaking area, please note that your sources for this discussion must be in
English). This bibliography must incorporate a personal communication with a local expert in the field.
B. What does your work future look like? Conduct a career-research investigation which analyzes:
degree/certification requirements, work environment, job placement, relative pay scales, and other aspects
of the career you plan to enter upon completion of your degree. This bibliography must include personal
communication with someone working in the career for 5 or more years.
C. How has your major/career field been depicted in films, on television, or in narrative gaming? To what extent
is this depiction plausible? How might this influence you or other people who are choosing this major or
profession?
An effective annotated bibliography is used to compile research sources in one location and provide the researcher with
quick access to the information contained in each source.
You should write your annotations as if they are directed at an interested, but non-expert reader. Your colleagues in
class, for example, might be a useful audience to consider.
Please apply the “CRAAP Test” (which was briefly described in the ResearchPath Tutorial, as well as in the linked image)
to all sources, especially web-based ones.
Your annotated bibliography will consist of the sources that you have deemed useful and relevant to your research
question. While you may encounter sources that are not relevant or do not fit the scope of your project while
researching, for the purposes of this assignment, you will only include the ones that you find useful, relevant, and
reliable.
1. Cite the source in either APA or MLA format. The citations should be organized in alphabetical order by author
just as in an APA References or MLA Works Cited page.
2. Follow with a brief annotation that summarizes the source (approx. 2-4 sentences). You may quote from the
source, but do not copy and paste the abstract. Ideally, all of the annotation should be in your own words.
3. In 1 or 2 sentences, explain how the source answers your specific research question.
Constraints: The annotated bibliography is a fairly rigid genre. Your citations must adhere to the appropriate citation
style format. This will be one of the central components of the grade for this assignment. Failure to follow format
exactly will harm your grade. Use the guides posted on Moodle to format in APA and MLA style
The annotations for each source should follow an academic style. This means that you should construct clear, direct,
grammatically correct sentences that effectively summarize what each source has to say. Additionally, you should
explain how each source is relevant to the issue that you have selected and what it adds to your knowledge about your
issue. First person is acceptable in your annotations.
Specific guidelines to follow when completing this assignment are:
An introduction which describes which research question you chose to answer, and what kind of sources you
found.
6 sources of various types (book, article, peer-reviewed article, website, etc.). You don’t have to include every
type of source, but I’d ask you to shoot for at least three different types.
Sources should clearly connect to the Research Question you’ve chosen.
Adherence to appropriate citation format for all citations.
Sources in alphabetical order according to author.
Thoughtful and complete annotations of 100-150 words.
Correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Due: no later than Sunday, November 29, 11:59 pm via Moodle.
