1. Find and write down the exact statement in which the authors describe the purpose or rationale of the study (why they did it). (include quotes around statement and pg. number)
2. Now describe the purpose of the study. What specific problem or issue does this research address? (Use your own words, re-read relevant sections of the text and make sense of what it means.)
3. What is the “gap” or new knowledge in the research that authors were trying to address through their study?
4. Do you think the purpose of the study and the gap (or new knowledge) mentioned are compelling and/or meaningful? Why or why not?
5. What is the context for this research? In other words, what does the literature review tell us about the background we need to know to understand this study. (in your own words)
6. What has been studied or determined already? Literature reviews discuss what has already been determined by discussing past research, that way they can address a need or gap in the literature with their study.
7. What is the “ongoing dialogue” based on the literature presented? What does the literature tell you about this topic/research area?
8. Based on the literature review, what is the importance of this study in particular?
9. What are the research questions that the study is based on? What is being explored/investigated?
10. How did the researchers collect the data (e.g., procedures)? What data was collected and why? (e.g., population groups)
11. How did the researchers analyze the data? (Start big, quantitative or qualitative, then dive in to direct methods: what subset of quantitative or qualitative?)
12. In your own words, how does the way in which researchers approach data analysis (research approach) help answer their research questions and fulfill the purpose of the study?
13. What are the results of the study (what they found)? What did the authors learn overall?
14. What are the educational implications of this study? (Note: Implications are suggestions/recommendations for how the research findings can be applied to policies, practices, different theories, or future research studies)
15. What is the significance of this study? Why does this research matter? (Note: Significance is the overall importance of the study. Why should we care? These are broader assertions and can be related to implications. Why do the implications matter?)
16. What are future directions this research could take? (e.g., different populations, different research questions, different data sets, etc. Be specific.)
