one typed full page W r i t i n g
The purpose of the object exercise is to closely study the object of your choice and to discuss how you would conduct your investigation into its meaning and purpose. Choose any object you wish, it does not have to be an “art” object; an everyday item or one that you have never looked at closely works well too. It can be something from home, work, school, something you found, etc. This essay should be minimum of one typed full page and should contain the following:
- Describe the object in fullest possible detail (in terms of the concepts we have learned from Module 1: form, shape, size, color, texture, etc.)
- Who do you think made it?
- Where do you think it came from?
- What do you think it was used for?
- You may know what your object is by looking at it, but explain how you arrived at that conclusion (do you know what it is from experience—drawing on prior knowledge, from observation—you have observed its characteristics in something else, from using your senses, or from seeing it somewhere?)
- How would you obtain the information that you seek? (Books, other people, etc.)
- What kinds of research methods would you use?
- How might an art historian approach this object?
