1) Participant observation has many stages, and each can present challenges. The first stage of participant observation is entering the field. According to Bachman and Schutt (2020), this stage creates the foundation of data collection and development of relationships that may be used to overcome problems. The challenges that can arise in this stage include establishing a trusting relationship, informed consent, access to participants, The next stage is developing and maintaining relationships. At this stage, researchers must be careful in how they manage their relationships with the participants, as trust allows for continuance of observations and interviews (Bachman & Schutt, 2020). Field notes are also an important stage of participant observations. Note taking can be challenging if the observer is taking too in-depth notes rather than jotting down brief notes or taking notes that will not make sense to them later (Bachman & Schutt, 2020). Lastly, managing personal dimensions is also an important stage. Bachman and Schutt (2020), state that observers often become personally and emotionally involved in their studies. They also state that this may be challenging as the researcher can place themselves in dangerous situations or alter the study to remain on good terms with their subjects.

The most challenging stage in my perspective would be entering the field. Trust building can be difficult in personal situations, so attempting to obtain trust from a stranger to conduct research seems like it would be even more challenging.
