Recommendations: I want to strongly caution you against just doing an online search on this topic. Lots of people with no clue what they are talking about and a political axe to grind write things about the Civil War, its causes, and its aftermath. There are mountains of terrible books on this subject, and, as publishing on the internet is easier than getting a book published, the internet is even worse. The stuff you find on the internet is likely to be worse than no research at all, so don’t use internet sources unless you have really good reason to trust the source.
A good online resource is the following Yale course, provided free to the public: https:// (Links to an external site.)
There is the Ken Burns documentary on the Civil War which you can find on Netflix. It is also available from the library. It is not as scholarly as the Yale course I linked to above, but it provides a good overview of the war itself. It might be especially helpful for the topic. When it comes to books there are quite a few good ones. The two I would recommend are James McPherson’s ‘Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era’ and Eric Foner’s ‘Reconstruction: America’s Unfinished Revolution’
