Overview

This assignment is part of your Theory Portfolio Project. In this assignment you are required to critique a criminological deterrence theory that you have studied. You will do so by looking to society (FBI 2020 Most Wanted website) and using the same criminal used for the Module 1 Theory Portfolio Paper 1 assignment. You will assess whether the theory is being employed in the criminal justice system. Make sure you consider the following as you work on this assignment:

• The crime/criminal you select from the FBI Most Wanted website(s) should be based upon your interests. However, you should think about crime in a theoretical context as certain theoretical explanations have their own implications.
• The expectation is that the theory selected will be applied correctly and that the implications of the theory for CJS crime control, prevention, and treatment approaches are fully explored.
• To successfully complete the assignment, you are expected to study the key points and complete all assigned readings for this module before you begin. Familiarize yourself with the assignment’s grading criteria. Include all the information expected in the assignment.

1. Review your selected criminal conduct/behavior selected from the FBI 2020’s Most Wanted.
2. In a 3- to 4-page paper, explain the theory you selected in Summary 2 and why it applies to the FBI Most Wanted criminal selected. Make sure to:
   • Explain the theory’s significance considering social, political, and economic contexts. Are there any societal changes that may have impacted it development?
   • Explain how the theory could be operationalized within the criminal justice system in prevention, treatment, and crime control models. Discuss which institutions are implicated.
   • Critically analyze the strengths and limitations of the theory. Is there research and/or data that support the theory’s explanation of the criminal behavior selected?
   • Explain how the theory could be modified to better capitalize upon its strengths and decrease its limitations?
   • Use at least two outside reference sources to support your writing.
   • Format your title page, paper, in-text references, and references according to APA (7th ed.) reference style.
