COVID-19 has caused a spike in companies offering Work From Home opportunities. Will these changes stick and how will that affect the business world?

The Work From Home movement has gained steam as more business is able to be accomplished virtually through faster and better internet service and tools. However, COVID-19 has skyrocketed this trend beyond any previous growth in a short period of time.

I am curious how this will affect business culture at large as well as it’s affects on real estate, travel, and other related industries.

• Will companies continue to send employees on business trips when Zoom has been shown to be effective?
• Will companies looking to save money on overhead continue to offer Work From Home opportunities and how will that effect the commercial real estate market?

Yes, changes will stick but we won’t know the full impacts for a long time.

There is no doubt work from home will be more common post COVID-19 but it will take a long time to fully understand the impacts of work from home. I think you make a good point asking about its affects on culture. Currently, the majority of employees are working for the same company as when the pandemic started, so they’ve already been integrated into the company culture at the office. What will happen to culture in 5 or 10 years when those employees may be at a new company or haven’t been immersed in the culture in the same way they once were. The Forbes article linked shows a few ways to communicate and keep the culture alive but there is no substitute for face to face interaction. I know some companies have been looking into a hybrid model where employees won’t have a permanent workspace, instead they will build more collaborative areas that employees could come in a few times a week to use.
