  • Wilson, Nicole DeniseOct 29, 2020 at 05:18WEEK 2The individual in the case study that I was assigned to a Hispanic male, 88 year-old with a past medical history of Hypertension, G.E.R.D., B12 deficiency and chronic prostatitis. Hispanics come from a collectivistic culture where group activities are dominant, responsibility is shared, and accountability is collective. For the Hispanic community, issues of morbidity rather than mortality are of greatest concern (CDC, 2019). When communicating with different cultures, language is an important aspect that one should be sensitive because it has less to do with competency and more to do with the cultural meanings people attach to language. Hispanics have the highest uninsured of any racial or ethnic group within the United States. Hispanics are the nation’s largest ethnic group and their share of the U.S. population is expected to grow. The socioeconomic status of Hispanics is comparable with that of African Americans when it comes to healthcare management. Many African American men despise seeing a Physician in regards to their health unless they are extremely ill. Hispanics are known to have low socioeconomic status is associated with unhealthy behaviors or lifestyle. Along with African Americans, Hispanics or low-income families have health-related behaviors such as smoking cigarettes, being overweight, and being physically inactive (US dept. of health, 2014).The domain that I will utilized to assess my patient is the affective domain which involves the attitudes and beliefs about the subject. When conducting a nutritional assessment, I will first evaluate the amount of food the patient consumes on a daily basis. Based on the vitals, the patient is 5’6 and weighs 110lbs. The BMI is 17.8. This indicate that the patient is malnourish. A nutritional risk screening, a simple and rapid first-line tool to detect patients at risk of malnutrition, should be performed systematically in patients at hospital admission. Patients with nutritional risk should subsequently undergo a more detailed nutritional assessment to identify and quantify specific nutritional problems. Many Hispanics combine traditional health care practices with Western medicine. Although the use of Western medicine tends to be more prevalent, hispanics who cannot afford these services often resort to traditional practices (US depth of health, 2014).Moreover, completing an assessment requires patience and discipline related to the behaviors that is displayed by psych patients. The brain is a very complex structure. It contains billions of nerve cells, called neurons that must communicate and work together for the body to function normally. Per researchers, connections between nerve cells along certain pathways or circuits in the brain can lead to problems with how the brain processes information and may result in abnormal mood, thinking, perception, or behavior. When assessing  a mental health patients, it is  important that nurses keep a distance between her and the  patient, explain the procedure prior to touching, always have someone close by in case of extremely aggressive behaviors.References: CDC.
