ACADEMIC PART 1: Essay OR Google Slides Presentation Due by 11:59 PM on Sunday, November 1 (100 Points)

1. In Weeks 1 and 2 of this class, I had you read this kind of Statistical Overview about the U.S. public educational system, which I compiled from the sources listed below. Read the Statistical Overview very carefully–really studying the information it contains.

    1. National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) (Links to an external site.)
    2. “2015 | Mathematics & Reading at Grade 12” (Links to an external site.)
    3. “High School Diploma Criteria Fall Short, Study Finds” (Links to an external site.)
    4. “Public High School Graduation Rate” (Links to an external site.)
    5. “Indicator 23: Postsecondary Graduation Rates” (Links to an external site.)
    6. “Undergraduate Retention and Graduation Rates” (Links to an external site.)

2. On the Internet, conduct some research on your own about the information in the Statistical Overview. Try to find out why so many students in the U.S. public education system are not academically successful. Listed below are some sources that can help you; I particularly recommend that you become acquainted with the information in numbers 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9. Click HERE to find out why!

3. Do either A or B:

A. Create a Google Slides presentation with at least 10 slides. In it, do three things. First, prove that U.S. student success rates are low. Identify and briefly summarize credible sources that confirm that many secondary schools (high schools) and post-secondary schools (colleges and universities) have low student success rates. Second, explain how schools in the public education system are funded, and how these funds may not be sufficient and may be misused. (For example, how much money does Los Angeles Unified School District receive per student, and how does LAUSD spend this money–and if an LAUSD school in Brentwood is better than one in Compton, then explain why is it better.) Third, discuss steps that can be taken to increase student success rates in the public education system. What can all the players in the U.S. public education system–politicians, school boards, school administrators, teachers, students, parents–do to increase the student success rate?
