Choose ONE of the following ethnic groups that we have studied in this course and answer ALL the following questions about the group. Chinese Americans, Cuban Americans, OR any ONE new immigrant group that has come to the USA in large numbers since 1960s of your choice. (examples Haitian Americans, Nigerian Americans, Jamaican Americans, Vietnamese Americans, Sudanese Americans)

a) Using information from the US Census, and other relevant sources, outline the most current economic and demographic characteristics of the ethnic group.

b) Using as many of the features of ethnic stratification studied in this course discuss whether the group is a dominant or a minority group.

c) Discuss any forms of discrimination, prejudice and racism against members of the group in American society. Why do you think members of the group are treated so negatively? If they have not faced any of these negative experiences, can you explain why you feel they have been immune to them?

d) To what extent have members of the ethnic group assimilated? Note; to answer this question fully you must show the extent to which members have conformed or not conformed to each of the seven phases of assimilation offered by Gordon.

Title; Develop a title for your paper; Example. Chinese Americans: A sociological analyses.

Introduction: State what your paper is about; you can state your objective here; you may re-word the question and use it as your introduction. You may also state the sources of your information example— in writing this paper I used information from the PowerPoint slides provided for the course, textbook, YouTube and other sociological sources. You may also state the format/structure of your work here—example—the paper begins with definition of key concepts and statistics about the deviant behavior, this is followed by a brief history, and then the factors responsible for this form of deviance.

Main Body: Discuss the demographic and economic statistical data about the group here using a trend format—example, in 1980 there were 20,000 Chinese in USA, by 1985 the number has increased to 500,000, and by 2010 the number of Chinses has increased considerably to over one million.

Next, provide a brief history about the ethnic group if possible; this is sociology not history—only a short history about the group in American society. You must state your sources of information.

Then, describe/ analyze whether the group is a dominant or a minority group; provide as much details as possible.  This is one of the longest part of the paper it may take you several paragraphs as you analyze all the factors or conditions that suggest that the group is dominant or a minority group.

Next, discuss any forms of discrimination, prejudice and racism against members of the group in American society. Why do you think members of the group are treated such negatively. If they have not faced any of these negative experiences can you explain why you feel they have been immune to them?

Finally, answer the question, to what extent have members of the ethnic group assimilated? Note; to answer this question fully you must show the extent to which members have conformed or not conformed to each of the seven phases of assimilation offered by Gordon.

Conclusion: Speculate, about what will happen in 5 years, 10 years or more to members of the group in American society? Would their culture survive, would they become more powerful socially, economically? That is, would the social, economic and political conditions of the group change? If so how?
