What do you think is the most important factor affecting the collection of digital data and what impact do you think that this factor has on the ultimate quest for obtaining evidence in a criminal case?

There’s a number of factors that affect the collection of digital data: cost, money, ethics, use of language, privacy, and cultural issue.

One of the most important factors is the issue of privacy. This is important because data privacy can apply to critical personal information, banking information, and personally identifiable information (PII). One must consider privacy issues when requesting to obtain digital evidence in a criminal case. How might this affect one’s privacy rights as it relates to the data? This also begs the question, what personal information is the government and law enforcement entitled when seeking out digital evidence in a case. Many people express their concerns about their personal information on the internet and was is obtainable. That is why I believe privacy is the most important factor effecting the collection of digital data.

Why is it important to look for Big Data and how could it be used in enhancing or finding evidence in a criminal or civil violation investigation?

Big Data is helpful to analyzing and extracting information from data sets that are extremely large and otherwise complex to to deal with. Big data can reveal patterns or trends, especially when it comes to human interactions and behaviors.

Without big data, large data sets may not be extracted from traditional data processing applications and software.

Big data can be used in criminal or civil investigations by locating and extracting hidden networks among criminals. It also makes it easier for law enforcement to store and access records. Big data is also useful in conversations regarding analytics. For instance, data analytics systems can make connections between data points, like using an algorithm to predict whether a defendant will be found guilty or not at trial, which I don’t condone at all. Big data has also played a very important role in cyber security and protection against cyber criminals.
