Addictions- 10a-roseanne-After rereading my initial post in Unit 1 I was able to reflect on the importance of assessment in the field of addiction. In unit 1 the views of assessing clients with substance consist of using the assessment to gather information regarding a client’s life experiences, values, desires and beliefs. Assessments are also used to help professionals apply treatment plans that are culturally appropriate and tailored to the needs of the client (Myers & Salt, 2019). The understanding of assessment changed as I progressed in the Assessment of Addiction course over the 10-week period as I have more understanding of the complexity of assessment as well as the extensive details assessments provide regarding client care and how the assessment results contribute to the development of a treatment plan for the clients. Participating in the assessments and the discussion post contributed to my shifts in thinking regarding the usage of assessments as it allowed me to better evaluate what assessments are best for clients based on their needs. With the assignments I also gained the ability to evaluate what assessments are most useful in the treatment of substance abuse disorders through analysis of case studies. Having a deeper understanding of the impact of assessment in the field of addition has allowed me as a student to better prepare for field practice in the aspect that assessments are useful in aiding a professional in diagnosis and treatment of clients with underlying mental health conditions and substance abuse disorders. Assessments also allow for professionals to gather information regarding multiple problematic areas of the background of the client so that a bigger picture Is formed to work with the client to successfully progress in treatment. This course has also allowed me to gain better understanding of various assessments used in the treatment of substance abuse disorders and mental health conditions. Diagnosis of substance abuse disorders and based on findings listed within the DSM-5 and is based on individuals’ patterns and behaviors regarding substance usage (Sprong & Davis, 2018). Other factors that changed regarding the assessment process in the field of addiction is that I have better understanding regarding the complexity of many assessments and that specific assessments require professionals to be trained and skilled in applying assessments to clients. Professionals that lack the competency and training to administer specific assessments to clients can put the client at risk for harm as well as to be placed in a treatment intervention that is not tailored to their needs based on assessment results and diagnosis. I don’t have any experience in administering assessments in the field of addiction, however the course has allowed me to evaluate the importance of assessment in the field of addiction as well as the impact effective assessments has on the treatment of clients with addiction based on the validity and reliability of the assessment. What are some similarities that you notice among learning points? roseanne- 10b addiction- In the field of addiction ethics are important in ensuring the clients are protected from harm and ensures professionals always act on the best interest of the clients. Professionals in the field of addition should use the ethical decision-making model regarding applying practice to clients with substance abuse and underlying mental health conditions. The ethic decision making models provides framework to professionals to allow practice to be conducted based on conflict resolution consist with professional and personal values as well as allows professionals to evaluate any conflict that could potentially be present. With the ethical decision-making model professionals can take the necessary steps to ensure the action being taken is best for the clients needs based on the ability of the professional to select and implement a specific course of action as well as identify problems and potential solutions to problems. This model also allows professionals to assess consequences for each chosen solution as well as reflect on ethical consequences and decisions (Sprong & Davis, 2018). The ethical code I chose for my discussion is the Informed Consent for treatment as I feel that its crucial that a professional provide the client verbally and in written consent everything the treatment options entails as well as the limitations present in treatment. Professionals in the field of addiction must ensure that all clients are fully aware and informed regarding treatment as well as providing the clients with information regarding treatment that is easy for the clients to understand. This includes informing the client of the right to refuse any services provided, the wright to withdraw consent, information regarding the cost of treatment, risk, purposes, as well as the limitations in treatment. Clients should receive both a verbal and written copy of their responsibilities as rights that are provided by the professional in which the client must sign stating they understand the information contained on the informed consent for treatment (National Association for Addiction Professionals, 2013, Section 1-2). Regarding the assessment process Informed Consent for treatment allows the client to gain understanding of the aspect of the assessment process as well as how the assessment results are applied to substance abuse treatment. Informed Consent for treatment must be provided prior to the assessment process and should fully explain to the client presented in a format the client can completely understand. The informed consent must include the purpose and nature of assessment as well as the use of results for both the clients as other recipients. The components of the informed consent for treatment include ensuring the client provides consent that is voluntary as well as ensures the client is protected from influence that is undue as well as coercion. Other components are ensuring the client has the compacity to make the right decisions as well as be competent to participate in addiction treatment. Also, the agency must disclose the information in its full entirety which must include any alternatives to treatment as sell as the benefits and risk that are present in the treatment of addiction. All data collected on the client must be only released to individuals that are recognized to be both qualified to administer and interpret the data provided for treatment (Sprong & Davis, 2018). There are several ethical codes that are relevant to the Addiction Severity Index Assessment that was provided in Unit 6 regarding the client Rose Ingram in the case study. One of the ethical codes relevant to the case study of Rose Ingram is the scoring and interpretation of assessment results of the client. Professionals Professionals in the field of addiction must report the client’s assessment results as well as consider the clients background and personal culture as well as evaluate the impact of the results on the clients as well as ensure the client fully understand the assessment results. When reporting assessment results professionals must indicate any reservations that are present regarding the reliability and validity of the assessment based on circumstances and the appropriateness of the assessment for the client (National Association of Addiction Professionals, 2013, Section E.9.a.). Another ethical code relevant to the case study regarding the use of the ASI assessment on Rose Ingram is that counselors providing services relevant to assessment, interpretation, and scoring must support the process of assessment by confirming that the interpretations are valid and reliable. Professionals must have the ability to describe the reliability, norms, purpose and validity of any assessment used as well as procedures that consist of qualifications that are specific. Professionals in the field of addiction must always ensure that when assessing clients ethically responsibility must be considered (American Counseling Association,2014, Section E.9.c). Another ethical code relevant to the case study of Rose Ingram is that a professional must ensure the client is referred over for further evaluation for underlying mental health conditions. The assessment results of the Addiction Severity Index indicated that Rose Ingram needs to be referred over to be fully evaluated for underlying mental health conditions such as PTSD, Depression, or Anxiety. All information regarding referring the client over to another party for assessment includes the professionals ensuring that all questions are provide for referrals as well as ensuring all data provided is sufficient regarding the client’s background so that the assessment being provided is evaluated as being appropriate and fully utilized (American Counseling Association, 2014, Section E.6.b). I don’t have any personal or professional experience in applying ethical codes to client in the field of addiction, however I do have understanding that professionals must always ensure the clients safety and wellbeing is top priority and that the clients should always be informed of the treatment profess in treating addiction with the full understanding of any limitations in treatment. .social welfare kiera – 10a-The social advocacy that I researched on was referring to the African American population when it comes to police brutality. An action that I can personally take is to advocate and continue to research ways that I can help like volunteer or get into groups that support that. On a professional level I think I could stop those things If I say it before hand or educate people on it if they don’t know about the situations that have happened because of police brutality. The incidents that happened due to police brutality is something that we can’t take back because it is in the past but how we move on and what we do in the future is what matters the most. Provide your insights to a peer about how they can advocate for their chosen population.
