One policy that is in place to protect individual rights for students of Greeley-Evans Weld County School District 6 (D6) is the Bullying Prevention and Education policy. This policy states that a comprehensive program to address bullying will be developed and implemented in schools of all levels (D6, 2021). Some specific goals of this policy are to emphasize that bullying is not tolerated, to train staff and students on ways to prevent bullying, to re-educate students who are bullying, and to offer peer counseling for target of bullying, just to name a few (D6, 2021). Each student who goes to school has a right to have a safe and friendly school environment, so this D6 policy is critical to support that. To make this policy more effective, I would recommend a more secure way for students to report that they are being bullied since most students feel that saying something will not change anything.

As mentioned, the purpose of this policy is to prevent bullying and to educate staff and students about the effects of bullying and how to handle bullying. This policy balances the rights of students with the health of the community in a way that related individual health to community health. When students at the individual level feel that they are in a safe school environment then it will cultivate a safe community within the school.
