Writing is an integral part of this course. As a student, you will have several opportunities during the semester to write for self-reflection, to learn course material, to assess students’ comprehension of chapter topics, and to evaluate organizational processes via critical thinking skills and written communication.

Students must prepare a short essay (two paragraphs, minimum) discussing some aspects of the chapter readings. One, two or more topics could be provide: one topic must be selected. Discussion Boards must be submitted on or before 11:59 pm on the due date.

Review Chapter 2, and in particular, keep in mind the strong determination the colonist had for independence from the United Kingdom,while making slavery a key component to the passage of the Constitution.

The U.S. Constitution was ratified by the Philadelphia convention in 1787. This meeting was called to remedy the defects of the Articles of Confederation, but the convention wrote an entirely new constitution.

The goal of the American Revolution was liberty; this is perhaps the clearest case of a people altering the political order violently, simply in order to protect their liberties. The colonists were not asking for any liberties that they did not feel they were already entitled to as British subjects. The original intent of the Revolution was not independence; many colonists felt that they could have their liberties while remaining part of the British Empire.

The Revolution brought about many changes: government by royal prerogative was rejected; political power could not be exercised on the basis of tradition; human liberty existed before government was organized, and government had to respect that liberty; the legislative branch of government, in which the people were directly represented, should be superior to the executive branch.

QUESTION:

  • Do you feel the Connecticut Compromise was the best solution? Why or why not? What changes would you make?
  • Think about slavery and the Constitution and the mindset of the Framers as they sought to ratify the Constitution. Why was allowing slavery to endure and continue the Framers biggest mistake? What were the consequences of their decision?
