Health Disparities Reply 1 to Priscilla:

For this week’s assignment, I plan to research the population of seniors. The reason why I chose this population is because there is a continual increase in the elderly population. Elderly people are more susceptible to disability and disease. Because of this, they would need better access to health care in order to prevent disability and disease. Even though we know that the elderly population has the most needs, they are still being faced with health disparities.

There are health disparities that the elderly population face. This population is being faced with health disparities “because of factors such as economic status, race, and gender” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). The health disparities that the elderly population face are the lack of access to health care and the lack of affordable health insurance coverage because of their low socioeconomic status. Elderly people with low socioeconomic status are more likely to have poor health and poor health outcomes. Also, “social environmental factors such as residential segregation, discrimination, immigration, social mobility, work, retirement, education, income, and wealth can also have a serious impact on health and well-being” (National Institutes of Health, 2020). Furthermore, it is important to address the health disparities that elderly people face in order to find ways to solve this issue. By addressing this issue, we can reduce health disparities in the elderly population.

The policy for the elderly population includes the Affordable Care Act of 2010, which helps to make healthcare more affordable for everyone, including the elderly people. Furthermore, the Older Americans Act was signed into law in 1965, and the legislation was passed by the Congress this year to reauthorize it. This act “funds critical services that keep older adults healthy and independent—services like meals, job training, senior centers, health promotion, benefits enrollment, caregiver support, transportation, and more” (National Council on Aging, 2020).

Hi those are some excellent point you made regarding the targeted population in terms of the disparities which exist. What are your thoughts on long term care insurances in filling the gap in the needs of this population? What are some of the challenges senior face with this type of coverage?
