After reading Chapters 22-28 in the textbook, study guides, and participating in the discussion forums for this module, write an essay on the key points discussed chapters of the module and copy/paste your essay into the text window provided. (History discussion )

1.  In the 2012 election, Republican Party candidate was secretly recorded giving a speech to a private gathering of Republican donors and supporters.  His recorded comments caused a furor in the public and may have contributed to his defeat by President Barack Obama.  After viewing the video and reading the transcripts (Links to an external site.) of his comments, do you agree with his assessment of how Americans view government or do you disagree with how he viewed how Americans viewed the government?  (He is now serving as a senator for Utah, he was elected in 2018.)  Write a 4-6 sentence paragraph. 

2.  In 1989 communism in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union ended, bringing the Cold War with the Soviet Union to an end.  Today communists still run the countries of Vietnam, Cuba, China and North Korea.  Does the United States have a moral obligation to see the fight through and continue to fight to defeat communism in those remaining countries?  Why or why not?  Write a 4-6 sentence paragraph.

3.  The following is an excerpt from a speech Donald Trump gave at Mount Rushmore on July 4th, 2020: “Against every law of society and nature, our children are taught in school to hate their own country and to believe that the men and women who built it were not heroes but that [they] were villains.  The radical view of American history is a web of lies.  All perspective is removed, every virtue is obscured, every motive is twisted, every fact is distorted, and every flaw is magnified until the history is purged and the record is disfigured beyond all recognition”  You are at a point in your life where you have studied American history under American teachers.  Do you agree with President Trump’s statement, or do you disagree?  Don’t be afraid to be honest, this is your opportunity to publicly state your opinion on how we learn history in the United States.  Write a 4-6 sentence paragraph.4.  Respond to a minimum of two other students in 3-5 sentence paragraphs.

Class response #1 RuthI am disagree with how Mitt Romney thinks how Americans view government. I believe people who don’t pay income taxes, they pay taxes somewhere else such as payroll taxes, sales taxes, or property taxes. And also because they have low income. If politicians would speak their mind as how Romney did in that private gathering, we would see exactly how they are thinking and how they are planning to help in the government. In that way it would be easy for U.S citizens to find the best candidate to support in elections. Romney in his speech is forgetting about why the 47% of people depends on the government. He never addressed how the 47% got where they are. I read somewhere that that video cost him his election. 2. I don’t think the United States have a moral obligation to defeat communism. I believe that if the U.S continue spreading democracy, it is an imprudent or even harmful move for the country. If it does, It could receive more threats from those communist countries, more refugees will attempt to enter the United States and it will be resulting in an impact for the national economy. Spreading democracy simply could increase the risk of war. However, I believe the U.S has the power to spread democracy and make those communist countries to change as how it helped the Cold War to end. I also believe if the U.S continue spreading democracy, it would help those people suffering from political oppression, people dying in violence, and stopping hunger. 3. About Donald Trump speech, I believe, since there are many history books, we ourselves can draw our own opinions about the United States history. In this class I learned a lot about history. My conclusion is that the U.S has been built in wars, many sacrifices, and also it has been very selfish with other countries. I can understand why Donald Trump said that people in history has been seen as villains and not heroes. Morally, all those people who die for their country should not have die if the government was not thinking about their own good. Politicians during their terms in history tried to do their best for the country. Even though they knew many people would die about their decisions. There is a lot of hypocrisy in the U.S history. African Americans being discriminated when they should not have gone through all of that because it was the U.S people who brought them here, and just to take advantage of them. History helps us to understand who we are now and how to appreciate multicultural influences.  

#2 Alice Mitt Romney spoke about many subjects during the recording, one of the points he mentioned that I agree with strongly is that a large majority of the public will vote for their designated candidate no matter what. He mentioned that 47-49 percent of people will vote for President Obama, the exact number may not be correct and I’m sure there are a big percentage of voters who will automatically vote for the Republican candidate no matter what.  The point is that a large portion of the voters will choose their party’s designated candidate without considering anything about the person who would be president of this country.  While it is likely this person would align with more of their values than the candidate in the other party it is not always true and it is usually not even considered.  They are Republican/Democrat so I will vote for them.Yes the U.S. has a moral obligation to continue to fight communism in the remaining countries for the good of the world. I think when we usually think of communism we think of the Soviet style system and in turn focus more on the economics of it.  How the state controls what is produced, how to do it, how much, etc.  I believe this is a large part of why the U.S.S.R. failed and a key difference with the main communist power today, China.  They have adopted a more capitalistic economy while retaining the communist political power.  People like Jack Ma can build huge economic empires but cross the ruling CCP political party and in a snap he disappears.  The U.S. is not perfect but I believe certain freedoms must be protected, such as freedom of speech.I do agree with Donald Trump’s statements that he made at Mount Rushmore. I do not agree with many of his positions and as a person I do not like Mr. Trump and find him untrustworthy.  However I do believe he made some valid points in this statement.  The U.S. is a different place than it was even just 10 years ago but we should not negate everything that has happened.  I feel a lot of this is caused by the media.  Sensationalizing things and turning the public with a few choice headlines.
