  1. What style of leadership does Nurse Brown seem to exhibit most of the time?

Most of the time, Nurse Brown seems to exhibit participative leadership, which is also called democratic leadership. According to Xu (2017), participative leadership is a leadership style in which the team members participate in the decision-making process. The followers feel more engaged in the management process, more committed to goals, and more motivated to work efficiently. Since she is a “relationship and people-oriented” type manager and encourages her team members to discuss and make decisions, participative leadership would be the appropriate answer for this question.

  1. In what situations may this leadership style be inefficient?

Since participative leadership is a style that all group members engage and discuss their topic, it takes a long time for decision-making. Therefore, this leadership style is inefficient during the situations such as crisis or urgent problems which need to be addressed immediately. Also, if there are opinionated people in the member, it can cause arguments or conflict between them and make their relationship worse.

  1. What type of leadership style do you prefer your supervisor to use? Why do you find that style most appealing?

I prefer my supervisor to use combinations of participative leadership styles and transformational leadership styles for appropriate situations because each situation needs a different leadership style to solve the issue. As I mentioned above, a participative leadership style has some disadvantages on this style; however, I chose this because I prefer to be involved in the discussion and make decisions. It may take a long time to make decisions; however, it can build trust relationships between the leader and team members and improve team collaboration and job satisfaction. Besides, evidence has shown that nurses who engage in the participative leadership style are more prone to carry out team functions and individual responsibilities. It encourages team members to express their concerns and motivates them to work efficiently (Xu, 2017).

Furthermore, I chose transformational leadership as well because it is focused on change and motivation. I believe it is essential for the leader to motivate the team members to achieve their goals, share their visions, and inspire them. These leadership styles should be used case by case.

  • What style of leadership does Nurse Brown seem to exhibit most of the time?

Nurse Brown is exhibiting a democratic leadership style. The democratic leadership style is people and relationship oriented (Huber, 2013). In this type of leadership, the leader focuses on teamwork, making sure everyone is involved, and makes sure the team is involved in the decision-making process (Huber, 2013). Nurse Brown exhibits these qualities by facilitating group discussion, group decision making, and providing resources that the team may need to make the group decisions.

  • In what situations may this leadership style be inefficient?

According to Huber (2013), using a democratic leadership style often takes longer to produce results than other styles; this is because groups coming to an agreement takes adequate time (Huber, 2013). Due to this, democratic leadership style may not be effective in situations where there is a time constraint. Additionally, there needs to be high motivation from teams with democratic leaders, and teams need to be respectful of their peer’s opinions and diverse backgrounds (Huber, 2013). Since these characteristics are necessary, this leadership style will not be as effective as other styles when there is a team that is quieter, lacks motivation, or is disrespectful to others and their opinions.

  • What type of leadership style do you prefer your supervisor to use? Why do you find that style most appealing?

The leadership style that I find most appealing is the democratic leadership style. I appreciate this style in a supervisor because the democratic style allows for multiple perspectives, builds relationships, fosters group involvement, and allows for some autonomy (Gaille, 2018). However, it does depend on the group dynamics and desired outcome. I have been in groups that do not communicate well or are disrespectful to each other and the democratic leadership style does not work well because we could not easily come to an agreement. I have also had an authoritarian style supervisor and I did not like that style. This style works well in a situation where there is a crisis and quick, direct communication is needed (Huber, 2013); however, it does not work well in a customer service setting where individual personalities and ideas (as long as they are respectful) should be appreciated.
