- Non-Counseling Duties I applied for the school counseling position at RAMP Primary. One of the non-school counseling duties listed was to administer standardized tests and train other proctors and facilitators. Coordinating testing programs is considered an inappropriate duty for school counselors (ASCA, 2019). In my video, I discussed alternative ways I could provide support for the testing program. I suggested that I could help select developmentally appropriate tests that would provide student data to inform our SMART goals and intervention programs. I know that some of the local and state tests are mandatory, but should we need additional data or support for our students, I could help select tests that would provide us with the appropriate data. I also offered to start a small group for students regarding test-taking strategies and testing anxiety, as well as educate teachers about strategies they can implement in the classroom to relieve students’ test-taking anxiety. I explained that my role in testing is to interpret student data and make sure students feel prepared, but not to facilitate or coordinate.Position as Leader, Advocate, Consultant, Collaborator In my video, I discussed how I could assume the role of a leader, advocate, consultant, and collaborator. As a leader, I described how I could lead professional development opportunities and start initiatives that serve the needs of those in the school system. I also explained my role as a leader on the Student Support Team through RTI. As an advocate, I described how I would collect data in order to develop appropriate programs that support students’ needs. I also discussed implementing a school-wide social-emotional learning curriculum to be integrated into the core curriculum as a preventative program in order to promote tolerance and a sense of belonging in the school. I talked about how this program would advocate for those students who may not feel competent in their social skills or are feeling isolated and having trouble making friends, like the student presented in the case study. As a consultant, I talked more about teachers consulting me about how to integrate this curriculum into their classroom, as well as educating them on how to promote the values of the school counseling program in their classroom on a daily basis. My role in test taking that I described previously is another example of consultation, as administrators can consult with me about developmentally appropriate assessments. As a collaborator, I discussed working closely with teachers, parents, and community members. I talked about hosting parent meetings and collaborating with community members in RAMP City who could help support students’ mental health needs, like the private practitioners.
