Hello class and professor,
My name is Ron, but my family and friends call me RJ. I am 22 years old, born and raised in North Carolina. I have been with UAGC since August of 2020 and I am pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. I don’t have any children, but I do have a 10-month old puppy named Milo. I live at home with my family. I am a fraternal twin, so I look like my mom and my brother looks like our Dad. I graduated high school back in 2017 and it took me a while to find out what I really wanted to do with my life. Initially, I tried going to the Army, but I didn’t like the experience and came back home months after leaving. After graduating with my degree, I have many ideas for what kind of job that I want to pursue. I would like to be a guidance counselor, work in social services, or work for a company in their HR department. However, there are still other jobs that I am considering so these aren’t my only three options.
One topic that I enjoy researching is age discrimination. This is very important to me because I have experienced it as a young individual. Older people experience, age discrimination as well. I am not an interested as to why it happens, but I am more interested in preventing is because it is unfair. I work for a call center and we have a knowledge base for the type of calls that we take so I don’t perform much research for my work.
Some of the social issues highlighted in the video were the possibility of increasing one’s income level for black and white people, children who are raised by parents who are married, and people being born into different class levels. Honestly, I found nothing interesting about this video as I was already aware of these social issues. Like, Reeves said at the end of the video, “more needs to be done about this.” I completely agree with his statement. The data evidence and the research as a whole could be used to reform society in order to better support these social issues and could be used to fight against the injustices that exist in the world today.

Hello classmates and Instructor Vohar,
My name is Shaunita and I am a 30 year old Technical Sergeant in the United States Air Force. I am an air traffic controller. I’ve been in the Air Force for 12 years and in that time I’ve been stationed in Oklahoma, Germany, South Korea and I’m now stationed in Florida, but I’m currently deployed to Saudi Arabia. I am married to another air traffic controller and we have 2 small dogs named Sasha and Pollyanna. I was I am earning my degree in Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
The thing I enjoy researching the most are books. I read a lot of books, mostly fiction. I have certain topics that I enjoy more than others and I spend time researching what I should read next. I read a lot of book descriptions and reviews before I decide to add a book to my reading list. I also do a lot of research on different aircraft types and their characteristics. My curiosity from that mostly spawns from my job. I am a radar controller, so I see aircraft on a scope instead of in person. I like knowing what the aircraft look like as well as facts like climb and descent rates and average airspeeds.
The social issues highlighted in the video include determining how the class you were born into effect your chances of making it into a higher class. Their research shows that your race, the marital status of your family, level of education have an impact on income distribution.
Although I knew there was a disparity between the rich and the poor, the thing I found most interesting was just how much of a disparity there is. I was surprised at how little income the bottom 20 percent of the population had access to in comparison to the top 20 percent.
I think if more people looked at this research and had empathy for the struggle of the bottom 20 percent and realized it’s not as easy as some might thing to break a cycle of poverty then there might be changes to how that bottom 20 percent is perceived. If the perception of those individuals is changed, then there might be more willingness to change social and public policies that could help with the income disparity.

I began with the university back in 2019 (formerly Ashford) and it has seriously been one of the best decisions of my life to return to school. I tried to attend a traditional university over a decade ago and it just didn’t work out for me the way that I had envisioned; online learning has been a lot easier for me to manage. My major is Business Leadership; I also am pursuing two minors, Sociology and Public Administration. I currently work in the auto/property/casualty insurance world as a developmental specialist for claims. I am from Detroit, Michigan and I have two wonderful daughters (eleven-year-old and two-year-old). When I have spare time I love watching movies, crafting, working out in my yard, and hanging out with my daughters.I started thinking about different things that I like to research and my brain took a trip because I research literally everything having Google at the palm of my hands. General areas that I like to research are historical events(no particular time period or area of the world), current events, true crime stories, crafting techniques, art, health management (different health ailments), and many other topics. The social issues discussed in the video are inequality, the impact of having money, the impact of having married parents, education, and race have on the likelihood of one being wealthy (Brookings Creative Lab, 2015). The information in the video that I found to be the most interesting was that 52% of the wealth belongs to the top fifth of Americans while only 5% of the wealth belongs to the bottom fifth (Brookings Creative Lab, 2015). I’m aware of the huge wealth gap and I know that there are different factors that contribute to the likelihood that one would be wealthy, but seeing the figure of 52% wealth belonging to people in the top fifth of the world while others do not get the same opportunities is crazy to me. The research in this video could be used to guide public policy by providing people with factual Information regarding these disparities. The problem is that even with data evidence people lead with emotion and refuse to believe statistical information. References Brookings Creative Lab. (2015, July 20).
Class,
One topic that I have been researching within the last couple classes that interest me most is drug abuse, specifically because it impacts my day-to-day operations as a police officer. Personally, I feel that there is a bigger concern as far as drug abuse that goes far beyond just the people that are abusing them. I will further explain what I mean by that during the rest of this discussion. ” A transformative worldview holds that research inquiry needs to be intertwined with politics and a political change agenda to confront social oppression at whatever levels it occurs (Mertens, 2010).” (Creswell, J. W., & Creswell, J. D., 2018). The reason why I feel that this research method is the most applicable is because as previously stated, there is a major concern with something other than just the abusers of drugs. I believe that there is a concern with doctors who are prescribing more prescription drugs than what is needed, for longer than needed, and to people who don’t need it. I believe it becomes a political concern when certain companies are making the amount of money that they do to prescribe drugs to people. One big example that I believe has become political is the vaccine for COVID-19. These are just small examples. I believe that qualitive method research is most accurate due to the fact that this concern does not necessarily involve the use of experimental investigations in order to learn more about them but rather the results of what happens based off of prescription drugs.
The study is meant to understand the impacts of prescription drugs on a person. My title would be, “Prescription drugs lead to drug abuse”.
The social problem that concerns me is the crimes that are committed as a result of using drugs. Not long ago, I made an arrest on a person who I had found Heroin on. On our long drive to jail, I allowed him to vent to me about what was going on in his life. He began by explaining to me that his Heroin use all began when he was prescribed Opioids after a really bad car accident. After years of being prescribed prescription drugs and having to learn how to walk again, he lost access to the insurance company that was funding his medical needs. This caused him to quit taking Opioids cold turkey, which ultimately resulted in the use of Heroin. This person had multiple priors for violent felony crimes and was on privation for them. He had told me that he was committing these crimes in order to get enough money to buy drugs to keep him high. For those of you who don’t know, people like this seek a high roughly about twice a day. This is only from personal experience, but typically they get high in the morning, and at night. This becomes a cycle every single day. It also affects their lives in different ways other than health concerns. This causes people to lose jobs and family. Then they begin committing property crimes to find ways to fund their addiction.

Good evening class,
Select a research topic that interests you and also is an important social problem. Then, use the four combinations of worldviews, designs, and research methods in Figure 1.1 of Chapter 1 of the course text to discuss a project involving your selected research topic that brings together worldview, designs, and methods. Identify whether this would involve quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods research.
Topic
Community Land Trust
The lack of affordable housing is a social issue in American that drives homelessness and poverty. Community land trusts are nonprofit, community-based organizations designed to ensure community stewardship of the land. Community land trusts can be used for many types of development (including commercial and retail) but are primarily used to ensure long-term housing affordability. To do so, the trust acquires land and maintains ownership of it permanently. With prospective homeowners, it enters a long-term, renewable lease instead of a traditional sale. When the homeowner sells, the family earns only a portion of the increased property value. The remainder is kept by the trust, preserving the affordability for future low- to moderate-income families.
The length of the lease (most frequently, 99 years) and the percentage earned by the homeowner vary. Ultimately, by separating the ownership of land and housing, this innovative approach prevents market factors from causing prices to rise significantly and hence guarantees that housing will remain affordable for future generations.
Research methods
The Selection of a Research Approach- For my project, I would utilize the Mixed Method procedures, as the research calls for data collection, analysis, interpretation, and report writing. As well as proposals need to be submitted when applying for CLT’s. (Creswell & Creswell, 2018, Sec. 1.10).
The essence of this study- Affordable Housing and accessibility of resources in order to secure an economically diverse and equitable community that supports multigenerational families, the essential workers who are employed in our community, and our Lenni Lenape and Nanticoke First Peoples, and those struggling with growing inflation and increased gentrification.
