Objective:

The purpose of this report is to do a systematic fire safety inspection of a building. These directions include instructions on how to conduct that process.

Motivation:

The information and knowledge you obtain after completing the report will increase your understanding of what a firefighter and a fire prevention officer are expected to do. You will use most of the course outcomes and objectives when completing this report.

PLEASE NOTE:

You, the student, are NOT doing a formal inspection. The intent of this assignment is to provide an opportunity for you to gain knowledge and experience that will help you with this course and your educational goals at Valencia College. The process you perform is NOT a legal procedure, and there will be no repercussions or recourse concerning the violations you may find.

The information you obtain from the inspection will not be part of the legal inspection and is not construed in any manner as the formal inspection of the occupancy. Please let the the owner or occupant of the building know that the information you gain will not be publicized and is for your educational purposes only at Valencia College.

Instructions:

The report should:

1.include a cover page with the following:

a.the course title and section

b.your name

c.the due date

i.Address of building

2.be between 3 to 7 pages in length, including the cover page and pictures or diagrams

(Include pictures of the violations in the report but not more than two pages of pictures)

3.be doubled spaced with 1” margins

4.be typed with a 12 font character (Times New Roman)

5.have the pages numbered

6.include the Fire Safety Inspection Report form- provided in the instructions (filled in)

The Fire Safety Inspection Report form has a column for NFPA code references. The particular code or standard, the chapter, sections, and subsections of the NFPA code or standard that addresses the violation MUST be cited on the form. (The form can be copied and pasted as a word document into the report.)

The Fire Safety Inspection Report form also has areas for you to sign. This is necessary to document your attendance and participation in the inspection process.

Example: Under NFPA Reference: NFPA 10, Chapter 7, 7.3.3

Under Descriptions of Violations: Fire Extinguisher does not have a tag or label

To complete this on the form, you will need to access the NFPA codes and standards online. As a registered student of this course, you have access to the codes and standards at no cost to you.

NOTE: An Inspection Checklist form is included with the instructions on Blackboard to assist you in preparing your report. Please utilize this form to help you with finding violations, but DO NOT include the Inspection Checklist form with your report.

Include the body of the report, which will-
have the Fire Safety Inspection Report Form, any pictures, and any other documents that are associated with and will be included as part of the report, be submitted as ONE document only.
be submitted as a single word document

If you fail to follow any instructions, points will be deducted.

Submitting the update and the report:

Submit the report via Blackboard in the graded assignments of WEEK #7 or the Report tab in the course menu.   Please follow the instructions.
