army jazz orchestrayou must write H u m a n i t i e s
Students are required to attend and review 3 concerts per semester. Each review is worth 5% of your grade. Reviews should be 350 – 550 words, double spaced, 12 pt Times font, regular margins.
Reviews will be graded both on the content and the quality of writing.
Concerts usually have more going on than can be described in 450 words, so include a very brief discussion of venue/performers/instruments/concert overview, and spend the majority of the paper discussing one or two selections or movements that made a stronger impression on you. Use the musical terms that have been discussed in class re: tempo, dynamics, mood, emotional impact, and melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic content. Avoid vague adjectives. Apply class learnings to make educated observations. Use formal academic writing style, and please proofread before turning in.
Keep an open mind to the music you may hear. If you are critical of the performance, use good judgment and sensitivity, especially to student players who are still developing their craft.
BECAUSE OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC: online concerts are encouraged this semester only. I will provide a list of approved online concerts
