A case manager is not a profession by the normal definition of the word but more of a specialized practice that can be attached to any practitioner from multiple professions. The purpose of a case manager or managed care is to help provide more cost effective and better-quality health care for individuals with chronic conditions or many conditions. Case managers use a collaborative process to assess, plan, implement, coordinate, monitor and evaluate options and services to help an individual get their healthcare needs met (Fisher, 1996).

Mental health counselors or therapist help individuals cope with their internal problems or issues. The guidance is usually done through talk therapy using evidence-based treatments like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). The therapist listens and then helps the client develop possible solutions (Gorman, 2021).

Case managers and therapists often work long-term with clients and both care about making their client’s lives better. Therapist help a client develop their own solutions to issues and case managers often lead the way to solutions.

PEER #3 CLEA

A case manager and a therapist have many similarities and differences. To begin with, a case manager is a person who coordinates services that are located in the clients community to help them get the resources they need to better their lives. This could be working with dental offices, nutritionists, or helping them locate a behavioral therapist. A case manager is kind of like a go-between and a resource guide. A therapist is a trained mental health clinician who has a license, extensive academic and experiential training (Baker, C., 2020). A therapist also is the person who has a conversation and provides navigation strategies for the client on how to handle feelings, thoughts, dilemmas etc.

These two entities both have the same goal; to help those in need lead a better life by giving them the tools necessary to better their lives. The steps they take in order to help these people are different, however the goal is the same.
