Use Chapter 4: Character Analysis in the WAL text to help develop the first essay. This essay should be at least 2-3 pages double spaced and in12 point font. View the supplemental material in this folder before you begin to draft your essay. Be sure to format it using the MLA style guidelines. Students are not required to have a work cited entry because the text is in the Norton Anthology, vol. 1. I will provide the reference entry for the anthology, but you are not required to have a work cited page. However, you should have the in-text citations with the author’s last name and the page number where you retrieved information in the text. Please view the example and rubric to help plan and develop this essay.

Essay Topics for Essay 1 (Characterization)

Choose one of the following topics below, and write a five-paragraph essay. Remember to prove your argument with the text—no outside sources. Cite any quotations or ideas that may be paraphrased to avoid plagiarism. Include textnotes for all quotes. Remember when a writer makes a textnote in a paragraph, the author and page number is needed. If the author’s name is stated in the sentence, the textnote needs only the page number. However, if the writer includes another quote from the same source in the same paragraph, only the page number is needed in the second textnote. For Essay 1, the only source that should use is the Norton textbook, so I do not require a Works Cited page.

To cite at the end of the text within the paper, type the author of the text and the page number in the Norton text from where the information was cited.

In the Writing About Literature (WAL) textbook, use chapter 4: Character Analysis to help you write this essay. Furthermore, look at chapter 14 (p. 280) in WAL for the format of the paper. There are several examples of what the essay should look like. The rubric has two sections regarding format.
