Digital Storytelling Project (aim for approx. 10 -15 min story)
For this assignment, you will come up with a specific question related to some issue and or theory from the course and explore that question through the form of digital storytelling. By taking a digital storytelling approach, you will have the opportunity to shape your exploration of the question through your own point of view.
This doesn’t mean its all-just opinion! It’s opinion, response, analysis and/or reflection on the chosen question, using the issues/theory from the course as a frame: you might use the course theory to help you explain experiences or ideas; or, you might argue with the course theory. Your focus will be your own!
What kind of Question?
Let’s think first about the types of questions you might pose for your project.
Your questions can be as impersonal or personal as you like.
Here are some quick examples – these are quite general and need more scope. Feel free to use or modify them, make them more specific, or come up with one on your own:
1.How do Canadian institutions shape the experience of acculturation for new arrivals? [if this applies to you, you could explore this through your own personal story]
2.Why is it so important to understand differences in non-verbal communication? What could go wrong? (you might explore this through your own experience(s) of intercultural engagement)
3.Select an issue/debate in society – like the Quebec Secularism Bill. How do you feel about the issue? What is the most pressing question? How is this connected to your own cultural identity/value orientations etc. (this will require some focus)
4.How I defined by own ingroup by defining an outgroup. (You will need to layer on your own experiences here – tell a story of (and reflect on) how perception and categorization shaped your view of self and other in some context).
5.Do my value orientations match the cultural world I live in? [lots of room to adapt this on – think about where you would place your self in one or more of the value orientations and how that fits/doesn’t fit with expectations like the structure of school, or social relations, or anything else you can think of]
6.What assumptions do I have about conflict and conflict management? Why did some particular conflict you experienced (either personal or social) go wrong/go well? (You could analyze an experience with intercultural conflict, either at the personal and/or social level).
7.How do our experiences help use move between categories of the DMIS?
You can choose to tell a personal story about your own engagement with the issues from the course or to tell a story at a more general level as a form of social observation and commentary. Or you can mix these together. How you approach this will depend in part on what you select as a question and how you choose to focus it.
Whether you lean more to the personal or social levels, the key is to bring in course concepts and theory to help you to tell your story. You can do this by:
oUsing it as evidence,
oAs a frame for shaping the segments of the story (ie. stages of conflict), And/or
oAs a set of assumptions or ideas to confirm or reject against your own observations/experiences.
What is the form of Digital Storytelling?
We will be guided by the classic 7 elements of digital storytelling. You will be given lots of resources and support for this on Moodle. But basically, think of it this way:
You will do a media project – using the Kaltura tool in Moodle. You won’t need to use additional software, unless you want to. You can choose between audio only (podcast style), video, or screen capture with voice.
The focus is not the form of an academic argument but to develop the answer to a key question overtly through your own point of view. An informed story that makes its point through a clearly biased voice. A story, not an essay. This does not mean you abandon evidence and support (see the important point above).
You will still need to think about structure, overall purpose and goal, tone, etc. I will provide additional resources and examples – including planning material like an outline template!!

Based on 10 Point Scale:
5 Minimal Pass with little confidence in success in future related work
5.5 Pass, but with deficiencies.

7-7.5 Good work with solid knowledge of the intended outcomes.
8-10 Excellent professional work demonstrating superior understanding of the outcomes
Expectations of the Question
The story has a clearly defined question that is relevant to the issues and topics of the course, and that question is explored in a logical way that is clear to the audience, with satisfying results that match our anticipation; the piece sets up an expectation of what we will experience, and it delivers.
Development of the story includes evidence of critical engagement with course material, issues and theories. Engagement might be through application of course material to illuminate experience and/or through exploration of the significance of course material based on experience.
Reflection and Interpretation
The story demonstrates the author’s sustained engagement with an issue or question, a clear framework for how the author wants to explore that question, and a clear sense of the argument or journey being developed. Evidence of sustained reflection and response to the issues is presented through the story’s development.
Development and Organization
The story has been developed with careful attention to narrative structure. Solid opening techniques that state the goal, the question, and a narrative path. Strong transitions and other signposting for the audience so it’s easy to follow along. If multiple modes are used (ie. Audio and visual) they work well together to enhance appreciate of the meaning.
The story is polished, with minimal errors or distractions in any written, visual or audio forms. It can be informal in presentation but should be mindful of audience need and be accessible experience. The audience should not struggle through form/tone/production issues to be able to appreciate your content.
