“Doing” or Enacting Relationships in the Era of Covid-19 – How has communication in relationships CHANGED?

A lot has changed in our personal lives over the past few months. In our class materials, we discuss how we can see relationships as “enacted” or “constructed” through communication. Choose a relationship in your life that you had before Covid-19, and that you still have now. Use the following to structure your assignment:

  1. Give this person’s name, or choose a pseudonym. Explain who that person is, and who they are to you. How long have you known them? How close are you? What brought you together? (Feel free to use a family member for this assignment). (2 points)
  2. Use real examples to support your description of how you communicated with them before Covid-19. Include in your description both in-person and “digital” communication (e.g., via texts, phone calls, Facetime/WhatsApp video, Zoom, email, etc.). (4 points)
  3. Describe how you have communicated with them over the past few months, since Covid-19. Include a description of both in-person (if it has occurred – if it hasn’t, explain why not) and “digital” communication (e.g., via texts, phone calls, Facetime/WhatsApp video, Zoom, email, etc.). Use clear, real examples to support your explanation of how your communication with this person changed during the Covid-19 pandemic. (6 points)
  4. Choose a theory or concept from the textbook on Relationships ( Chapter 9 in the textbook). Apply that theory or concept to the communication in the relationship you describe, including applying it to help you understand how your communication with that person changed during Covid-19. (8 points)

The assignment should be between 1 and 2 pages, single spaced, 1” margins, 12 point font.

Be sure to use proper references, as follows:

In the text of your paper:

The book:

Note: X should be replaced by the appropriate page number that you are citing.

Grading

An A assignment will follow ALL the instructions carefully, and show clear evidence of original thought and engaged analysis and discussion. In an A assignment, the paper is laid out clearly, with each section numbered clearly, 1-4, and using letters (a., b., c. etc.) or numbers (1., 2., 3, etc.) to clearly identify each sub-part. References are used when material from the Modules or textbook are quoted or referred to. A reference list is provided at the end of the assignment. (This does not need to be on a separate page).

  1. Give this person’s name, or choose a pseudonym. Explain who that person is, and who they are to you. How long have you known them? How close are you? What brought you together? (Feel free to use a family member for this assignment). (2 points)

Be sure you have addressed each of the items list for part 1 of the assignment.

  1. Use real examples to support your description of how you communicated with them before Covid-19. Include in your description both in-person and “digital” communication (e.g., via texts, phone calls, Facetime/WhatsApp video, Zoom, email, etc.). (4 points)

Examples should clearly be REAL examples – that is, they should be specific to your communication in this particular relationship. They should not be general. They should include examples of BOTH in-person AND digital communication

  1. (6 points)

The examples you offer in this section of the assignment should also clearly be real. They should offer a CONTRAST to the examples you offered in part 2. The examples you choose should be specific, and should show clearly how your communication in this relationship has CHANGED since Covid-19. Your examples should include BOTH in-person (if that occurred) and digital communication.

  1. Choose a theory or concept from the textbook on Relationships (Chapter 9 in the textbook). Apply that theory or concept to the communication in the relationship you describe, including applying it to help you understand how your communication with that person changed during Covid-19. (8 points)

Be sure to clearly define and explain the concept you have chosen, using the textbook (Chapter 9) . Next clearly apply the theory or concept to the relationship you have described. Give specific details of how it helps you in understanding how your communication with that person has changed.
